A Glimpse into the Midland Intern Experience

Every summer, Midland welcomes a new wave of interns eager to gain hands-on experience in their chosen fields and immerse themselves in the construction industry. This year, we were thrilled to have Adam and Shane join our team—Adam in Accounting and Shane in Quality Control and Assurance. From day one, they dove right into their roles, quickly becoming valuable members of the team.

What Makes a Midland Internship Special?

At Midland, our internship program offers more than just a summer job—it’s an opportunity to explore and grow with both Midland and Barrett Industries. Each intern works on a long-term project throughout the summer, alongside their daily responsibilities. At the end of the season, all Barrett Industries interns gather together to give a presentation on their projects to their peers and leadership. This provides an opportunity in honing their public speaking skills and showcasing their hard work. For leadership, it provides an opportunity to engage with promising young professionals, future employees, and their creative ideas. This year’s presentations took place in Cincinnati and included a trip to the aquarium!

A Well-Rounded Experience

The learning doesn’t stop at the office. Our interns are given the chance to travel to various Midland locations and job sites, gaining insight into our different business units and pavement preservation processes. Experience on active work sites and plant provides firsthand experience on the importance of safety to the job. Each week, they also participate in a Barrett Industries lecture series covering a broad range of topics—from accounting to marketing—providing them with a comprehensive view of all the different specialties that come together to build a successful business.
